VIA University College and the R.U.M.- Chair: Pioneering Sustainable Practices

In an era where sustainability is at the forefront of global concerns, educational institutions are stepping up to lead the way in environmentally conscious practices. One such institution making significant strides is Via University College which has recently introduced the R.U.M.-Chair. This innovative initiative emphasizes sustainable principles, focusing on minimizing carbon footprints and promoting circular economy practices.

Understanding the RUM-Chair

The R.U.M.- Chair symbolizes Via University College’ commitment to integrating sustainability into its curriculum and culture. Designed not just as an iconic piece of furniture, the R.U.M.- Chair serves a dual purpose: it provides functionality within classroom settings & recreation areas while also acting as a catalyst for discussions around sustainable practices like Circular Economy, resources for all, Low Carbon Footprint & more

Low Carbon Footprint

One of the primary goals of the R.U.M.- Chair project is to ensure a low carbon footprint throughout its lifecycle. From the selection of materials to the production processes, every aspect has been carefully considered to minimize environmental impact. The chair is crafted from ReCycled materials, which are sourced to clean up the World from waste.

As Henrikke Lockert-Hansen from VIA University College puts it: "Low Carbon Footprint is of special interest to us all. We are fund of the R.U.M.- Chair that offers low Footprint of 15.2 Co2e Kg / chair which is great and for us an opportunity to support one of the Worlds challenges today. Also, we the students are focused on the environmental impact preserving resources for their future plays a role in our choice of University"

Moreover, the production of the R.U.M.- Chair involves waste post consumer materials that are used for the R.U.M.- Chairs - & when no longer in use, the Chairs are collected back, and the materials are used again - Never waste & materials for future generations to come. VIA University College avoids single-use-furniture.

Embracing Circular Economy Principles

The concept of a circular economy is becoming increasingly vital as we face the challenges of waste and resource depletion. The R.U.M.- Chair is designed with this principle in mind. Rather than being a one-time-use product, it is constructed to be durable and long-lasting. Its design allows for easy repairs and modifications, thereby extending its lifespan and cancelling the need for new resources. A University environment can be hard on the interior so the change of individual parts is a significant bonus.

Additionally, the school is taking advantage of the take-back program for the R.U.M.- Chair. Once chairs reach the end of their lifecycle, they will be collected, refurbished, and reintegrated into the school's ecosystem or recycled responsibly.  Or ReCycled at the factory for new R.U.M.- Chairs. This process ensures that materials are continually reused, reducing waste and contributing to a sustainable future.

An Educational Model for the Future

Via University College's R.U.M.- Chairs are more than just furniture; it's a cornerstone of a broader educational model that emphasizes sustainability. Educators can leverage the presence of the R.U.M.- Chair to engage students in conversations about sustainable practices and their importance in business and society.

Workshops and projects centered around the R.U.M.- Chair can encourage students to think critically about their consumption habits and the environmental impact of their future decisions. In doing so, Via University College is not only preparing students for their professional lives but also instilling in them a sense of responsibility for the planet.
